Stills of the Year
Maggie Sherwin, 10 pages
I have to admit that I was initially disappointed that Sherwin’s new zine didn’t teach me how to do something useful the way her last, Because I said Sew!, detailed the fine art of embroidering penis-emblazoned gifts for friends and family. I did still enjoy this new zine though, I think in part because of a certain nostalgia for the Carleton film studies program Sherwin has just begun.
The bulk of the zine is lists of her favourite film-related things, such as (in descending order of exclamation points) “Favourite Films of 2013!!!”, “Most Favourite Films Ever!” and “Actors that Impressed Me in 2013!” There are some good recommendations in this one (Beasts of the Southern Wild, Heathers) some I’m indifferent to (The Wolf of Wall Street) and only one that really turns the sky black and makes the rivers churn with blood (seriously, Jared Leto is the worst human being).
Anyway, Sherwin’s sheer enthusiasm for movies is infectious, and this was a brisk, fun read.
In response to her request for suggestions at the end,, I’m going to prescribe seven movies she might love (and should at least see):
El espíritu de la colmena (The Spirit of the Beehive) (Dir. Victor Erice, 1973)
L’Argent de poche (Small Change) (Dir. Francois Truffaut, 1976)
Mitt liv som hund (My Life as a Dog) (Dir. Lasse Hallstrom, 1985)
Down by Law (Dir. Jim Jarmusch, 1986)
La Double Vie de Veronique (The Double Life of Veronique) (Dir. Krzysztof Kieslowski, 1991)
Moon (Dir. Duncan Jones, 2009)
Raiku Samuwan In Rabu (Like Someone in Love) (Dir. Abbas Kiarostami, 2012)
